The True Art of Self Love: Self Love vs. Self-Care for Family Caregivers

Self-care seems to be a buzz word and/or trend these days. Self-care falls under both the obvious and not so obvious ways to practice self-care:

  • Hot showers or baths
  • Exercise
  • Eating right
  • Taking supplements
  • Getting the right amount of sleep

Then the not -so-obvious: Emotional self-care

  • Mindfulness
  • Meditation
  • Journaling (of course!)
  • Grounding in nature
  • Somatic processing
  • Body movement
  • Sound healing and so much more

So, what’s the difference between self-love and self-care?

Self-care is taking care of your mental, physical, and emotional well-being while self-love is taking care of your spirit and your soul. In my very-humble opinion, the spirit is the place and the space where we connect and reconnect with God and the soul is the place where we are given the gift of experiencing our emotions and given the opportunity to express them. We can then decide to express those emotions with love and compassion for both ourselves and others.

We get to honor ourselves and be a contribution to others.

From a personal development perspective, we can practice self-love through:

  • Through journaling, becoming aware of our limiting beliefs, negative self-talk, and negative beliefs.
  • Setting boundaries
  • Saying no
  • Delegating
  • Asking for help
  • Practicing self-expression through our new awareness of self
  • Learning to meet our own needs and then practice asking for others to meet those needs.

From a spiritual perspective,

  • Journaling
  • Praying
  • Meditating on God’s love instead of the negative, limiting beliefs
  • Saying NO to the beliefs that we have no luck, everyone else but me has it better, and all the other damaging beliefs we believe consciously and subconsciously
  • Reading the Book of Psalms
  • Practicing gratitude for and focusing on what we do have instead of what we don’t or what we think we are lacking.
  • Creating an abundance mindset – intentionally seeking out all the blessings we already have (when you focus on lack, which is exactly what you will find – what we seek, we will find). Think about it, if we focus on what is lacking, what others have that we wish we had, comparing ourselves to others – all the things that keep us in scarcity mindset – this is exactly what we will see, feel, believe, and see.
  • Checking in with our false beliefs and looking for that proof and evidence of all the blessings we already do have.

Once you have a positive relationship with yourself, you can go forward to create positive relationships with others; next up – check out the communication scripts for creating more harmony within the family.
